Aug. 30

Reading= We added the definitions of the following words into our reading notebooks: conflict, external conflict, internal conflict, suspense, and foreshadowing. We read pages 4 and 5, "The Dinner Party," 2 times and discussed better title options.

Homework: Put a book cover on your textbook by Monday of next week. Read for 20 minutes tonight.

Language Arts= We continued with Power Writing- no homework.
August 27=

Reading= Go over answers to EX activity; this was not graded or turned in. Write 6 sentences about your free reading book over this writing prompt: What confused or surprised you about the beginning of your book?

Homework: Read at least 20 minutes over the weekend your free reading book.

Language Arts= We went over how to get to my teacher blog. I gave the students 4 points for completing the proofreading letter. Students highlighted the corrections that they missed and turned in the corrected letter to me. Students worked on power writing for the remainder of the period. There is no homework for language arts class.

Have a great weekend!
Thurs., Aug. 26

Reading= We went over their reading records. They worked on an "Ex" activity to learn the meaning of the prefix "ex." This is not homework that is graded. We will go over the answers tomorrow in class.

HOMEWORK: Read for 15- 20 minutes in your freereading book. Exercise those brain cells!

Language Arts= We went over the answers to Wordy Gurdy. This was not graded- only a critical thinking activity.

HOMEWORK: Work for 15 minutes on the proofreading letter to try to find as many mistakes as you can. There are around 60-63 mistakes. This is graded for completion points only. Don't worry if you can't find all of the mistakes. We will go over the answers tomorrow in class.

Welcome Back to School!

August 24, 2010

Reading class= I read my favorite poem aloud to them and talked about what we couldn't live without. I can't live without peanut butter and cheerleading.

Language Arts class= We talked about planner quizzes. Students are required to write in their planners every day at the beginning of reading and language arts class. They are to copy off of the board what I have written down under PLANNER for both classes. They must write down something no matter if they have homework or not. On any given day, I might ask students to take out their planners and tell me what we did on (for example) Oct. 5 in language arts class. Students will open up their planners and write down what they did- it will be worth 5 points. This is hopefully getting them in the routine of writing in an assignment notebook to get them ready for high school. We also went over my classroom expectations.

August 25

Reading class= We went to the library to pick out our freereading books. Students are required to read 2 books a quarter or around 400 pages. They will fill out Story Maps over the books that they finish for each quarter. They may read fiction or nonfiction books. I have a separate Story Map that will be used for a nonfiction book. Sudents will read 15-20 minutes a night, at least 4 times a week. We are conditioning our brain cells to become better readers. This will be homework for the students on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and 1 day over the weekend. They will be writing about what they are reading in class and sharing with us their favorite passages.

Language Arts class= I gave them a tour of the classroom. They also worked on a critical thinking activity called Wordy Gurdy. This is not graded and is meant to dust off the brain cells. They may use the computer, dictionary, thesaurus, or a parent for hints. We will discuss the answers tomorrow after 5-8 minutes of time to finish it up.

I have enjoyed meeting all of you!
